October 2024 Update
UGME Curriculum Begins to Take Shape at October Retreat
The School of Medicine held a two-day retreat in early October to begin shaping our Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) program. The retreat brought together our staff teams with advisors and consultants from SFU and other universities including UBC, Western University, McMaster University and Washington State University. Day 1 was dedicated to laying a strong foundation, as we discussed our Mandate, Mission, Vision and Values, along with Indigenous ways of knowing and other underlying themes and pillars. This was followed by a deep dive into the principles and framework for competencies and milestones, approaches to curriculum development and a program timeline. On Day 2, we had the pleasure of hearing from UBC physician-anatomist Dr. Claudia Krebs, who spoke on how anatomy can be integrated into medical cases and presentations, enriching the learning experience for future medical students.
PGME Accreditation Application Planning Underway
We are excited to share that planning for Post-Graduate Medical Education (PGME) accreditation is officially underway. PGME accreditation includes two important steps: first, applying for institutional accreditation and then applying for residency program accreditations from each the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). We are aiming to submit the institutional application in early 2025, in time for CanRAC's (Canadian Residency Accreditation Consortium’s) May review meeting, following which we will focus on meeting CFPC submission deadlines in order to achieve accreditation of our Family Medicine Residency Program before opening in 2026.
Student Committee Provides Insights for Ideal Campus Experience
In late September, we met with our Learning Advisory Committee and heard their ideas on what medical students need to have in their learning environment to have the best possible experience at the School of Medicine. They discussed academic spaces like learning spaces, labs and libraries, clinical spaces including lockers, call rooms and work/study spots, and social spaces like study rooms and lounges. We came away with fresh insights and plenty of ideas on how to create a vibrant campus where future students will feel supported and excited to spend their time.
Space Planning Progressing
Functional programs for the School of Medicine's interim learning spaces and future permanent campus are now complete, detailing overall space objectives and the specific needs of future medical students, faculty and staff. The functional programs will guide the architects in designing optimal spaces. The selection of the architectural firm for the interim campus is in its final stages, with the renovation expected to be finished by summer 2026. Meanwhile, the permanent campus is slated for completion in 2029.
