CMA Delivers Formal Apology to Indigenous Peoples

September 18, 2024

Today, the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) issued an apology for its role, along with the broader medical profession, in the harms inflicted on Indigenous Peoples within the Canadian health system.

First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities across Canada continue to face poverty, food insecurity and limited access to housing and education—factors that contribute significantly to chronic health challenges.

“The CMA's apology is an important step in recognizing the profound harm that colonialism and systemic racism have caused Indigenous Peoples in the health care system. However, this is only the beginning of the necessary work ahead,” says SFU founding dean of medicine Dr. David Price. “Our School is committed to working with Indigenous communities to transform medical education by embedding First Nations, Inuit and Métis knowledge systems to ensure our students are deeply rooted in cultural safety, humility and compassion. While much remains to be done, we’re dedicated to this ongoing journey toward more inclusive care that honours Indigenous perspectives and experiences.”
