June 2024 SFU Medical School Update

June 03, 2024

Accreditation Submission Work in Full Swing

The School of Medicine's accreditation team is actively working on the first major submission in the CACMS (Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools) accreditation process. Currently, the team is finalizing the Data Collection Instrument (DCI) and will soon transition to preparing the Medical School Self-study (MSS), with both documents slated for submission by August 1. During the MSS stage, the School will invite participation from SFU faculty and staff as well as external parties to be Reviewers in a systematic and iterative self-evaluation process, drawing from information presented in the DCI.

A successful review of the DCI and MSS at CACMS’ winter meeting would secure candidate status for SFU and confirm a site visit in spring 2025. The site visit would be the last major step towards preliminary accreditation for the School’s MD program—a prerequisite to opening student admissions.

Students Needed for Learner Advisory Committee

The School is establishing a Learner Advisory Committee and is calling for Expressions of Interest from undergraduate and graduate students from SFU as well as other universities. Selected committee members will have the opportunity to help shape a new, innovative MD program and student services for the School’s future students.
