February 2024 SFU Medical School Update
Budget 2024: Possibility of Funding Confirmation in the Forecast
The BC government has set the date for the Throne Speech (February 20) and Budget 2024 (February 22), when SFU expects to learn of the results of the submission of the business case for the creation of a new school of medicine, and the funding that may be provided to start and operate the school. If funding for the school is confirmed from the provincial government, the next steps involve seeking approvals from the Senate of SFU and the Board of Governors. Once these key milestones have been reached, work on faculty and staff hiring, curriculum development, accreditation and enrolment planning will intensify.
Curriculum Planning Begins for the Medical School
The Medical School at SFU has initiated the process for curriculum planning and establishment of its Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) program. In accordance with SFU’s approval process for undergraduate curriculum, the medical school submitted a Notice of Intent to the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies (SCUS) on January 12. Approval of the Notice of Intent from SCUS will clear the way for the full program proposal to be submitted later this spring.
Preparations Underway for Phase 2 Engagement
Aligning vision and curriculum with the Fraser region’s diverse healthcare needs is a critical component of the Medical School’s development. As SFUMS enters its second engagement phase, a series of community consultation sessions will be held in Surrey, Abbotsford and Hope in early spring, each reflecting urban, suburban and rural community dynamics, needs and perspectives.
Funding Priorities in Development to Support Incoming Class
The inaugural class of the medical school is anticipated to commence in summer 2026, pending successful accreditation, with funding priorities being defined to ensure the proposed incoming charter class will be presented with a range of financial support opportunities.
