RegionsThe IAG is organized into five regions. The first two regions to be established (1960) were the European Region and the North American Region. As shown in Table 1, currently, the European Region comprises 36 societies, representing 33 countries. In 1995, the European Region commenced publication of a Bulletin. In 1997, the Region drew up a Charter of the Rights of the Elderly, which was presented to the IAG Council in Adelaide, Australia at the 16th World Congress. Other activities of the Region include institution in 1998 of a prize, provided by Merck Company, Italy, for outstanding activity in Geriatrics and Gerontology. Regional Congresses are held every four years. The 4th European Congress of Gerontology was held in Berlin, Germany in 1999. The most recent, the 5th European Congress took place in Barcelona, Spain in 2003. The 6th will take place in St. Petersburg, Russia June 27-30, 2007. In 2001 the Region won the bid to host the 19th World Congress of Gerontology which will take place in Paris, France from July 5-10, 2009. For the current executive, click here. The North American Region (NARC) is unique in that it comprises only two countries and four societies: the American Geriatrics Society, the Canadian Association on Gerontology, the Canadian Geriatrics Society and the Gerontological Society of America. For current executive and by-laws, click here. The Asia-Oceania Region was established in 1978. Currently, there are 14 member countries. Since 1995, the Region has published an annual Newsletter. Regional Congresses have been held since 1980. The most recent (7th) took place in Tokyo, Japan in November 2003. The 8th will take place in Beijing, China, October 16-19, 2007. In 2005 the Region won the bid to host the 20th World Congress of Gerontology which will take place in Seoul, Korea in 2013. For current executive, click here. For by-laws, click here. The Latin American & Caribbean Region (COMLAT) was established in 1991. Currently, there are 15 member societies from 13 countries. The first COMLAT Regional Congress was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1991. The most recent, COMLAT IV, took place in Santiago Chile, September 3-6, 2003. Additionally, in 1995, the Region hosted the 1st Pan-American Congress, which was held in conjunction with the North American Region (NARC), in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The 2nd Pan-American Congress was held in 1999 in San Antonio, Texas where a decision was formally taken to continue the meetings, alternating the hosting of Congresses between the NARC and COMLAT Regions at intervals of four years. The 3rd Pan American Congress took place April 30-May 3, 2003 in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The next Pan-American Congress will take place in 2007 in Mexico. The 18th World Congress of Gerontology, was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 26-30, 2005. COMLAT is online at http://www.socgeriatria.cl/ In 2001 at the 17th World Congress in Vancouver, Canada, South Africa became the first African country to be officially represented in the IAG. The Executive and Council look forward to welcoming other African countries into the IAG over the next several years.
