John Gray, PhD
Dr. John Gray, Secretary-General of the
International Association of Gerontology, is the principal of John Gray
PhD Consulting and formerly the Manager, Policy Development for Mental
Health Treatment Services, Adult Mental Health Policy Division of the
British Columbia Government's Ministry of Health Services. Since 1980, he
has been involved in a number of provincial government initiatives in
British Columbia concerning older people. These include mental health
policy and establishment of programs, medication issues, and
psychogeriatric strategies.
He was involved in the establishment of the
British Columbia consortium of the Canadian Study of Health and Aging,
a major study on dementia. He was a founding director on the advisory
board of the Centre on Aging at the University of Victoria and is an Adjunct
Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Western Ontario.
Prior to 1980, Dr. Gray was involved in clinical
practice and in mental health administration as Executive Director of
the Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford, a psychiatric facility and
community service, where he developed his interest in geriatric mental
health issues. He also worked as an Assistant Executive Director at Riverview
Hospital, British Columbia's only tertiary care psychiatric facility.
Dr. Gray served two terms as Second Vice
President of the Canadian Association on Gerontology and was the Chair
of the Organizing Committee of the 1990 Annual Scientific and Educational
Meeting. He served as the secretary of the 17th World Congress of Gerontology
Organizing Committee of the IAG.
