Global Institute for Agritech promotes student exchanges and field trips related to agritech collaborations to enhance SFU's impact.
Example #1, 2024 Summer: A delegation from Simon Fraser University, consisting of nine undergraduate students, two graduate students, and Professor Woo Soo Kim, undertook their first field trip to the Arusha research center to test their innovative agricultural solutions on 3,700 acres of diverse land. This initiative follows a formal research partnership established in 2022 between SFU and Aga Khan University, aimed at addressing agricultural challenges in Tanzania through mechatronics systems engineering and collaboration. The project reflects a deeper commitment to create impactful partnerships that empower students from both Canada and Africa while enhancing sustainable agricultural practices in response to climate change.
SFU Mechatronics students conducted two research workshops with Aga Khan University and the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) to share knowledge about their agritech projects and gather feedback from African farmers and researchers.
