1. Conceptual Idea
As mentioned in the introduction coffee is
a remarkable liquid. People enjoy coffee in different kinds of ways:
They start a new morning with a fresh cup of good smelling coffee,
t hey sit comfortably together talking, eating a piece
of cake and drinking coffee in the afternoon, and they need several cups
of coffee for staying awake in the night.
During the last decades, coffee became more and more important. While
coffee was a precious property at the beginning of the 20th century, today
it is accessible to nearly everybody.
Most people love either the taste or the effect (or both) of coffee.
That is why coffee is an essential and dominating part of most people's
daily life.
The taste of coffee has many varieties and in the last years different
kinds of coffee, espresso, cappuccino, coffee latte..., became more popular.
I'm one of those, who enjoy the taste of coffee and can't
imagine a day without this wonderful beverage. When I came to Vancouver for
the first time I was really impressed: "Starbucks" everywhere
- and none of them in Germany! With a feeling like being "Alice in Wonderland",
I spent most of my time during the early weeks of my stay in one of those
cafes. I like the atmosphere very much, but also the possibility of having
only a quick coffee or a 'take-home-coffee'.
After a couple of days investigating Vancouver
I had the feeling that 'Starbucks' are dominating the city. This is the
reason why one of my first thoughts regarding what spatial pattern to choose
for my project was an analysis of the distribution of 'Starbucks'
in Vancouver.
After knowing the topic of my project, it was necessary
to regard what I was doing in detail: First I wondered if there are any
social factors influencing the location of so many 'Starbucks'. The position
of 'Starbucks' near Skytrainstations would be plausible, because of the
high frequency of people - but are there also underlying social determinants
like income, average age or gender of the people living in this area?
And if I can determine these factors - are there other
areas in Vancouver, which are also suitable or even more suitable for new
locations of 'Starbucks'?
In the following parts of my project, I will answer
the questions above. Maybe my project will contribute to the new initialization
of 'Starbucks' in other parts of Vancouver and more people will have the
possibility of enjoying a new day holding a cup of fresh coffee
in their hands.
