This
project is oriented towards addressing the issues of traffic congestion
due to elementary, secondary and post secondary schools in North Vancouver.
I will focus on proposing a school bus service, which would carry out pick
ups and
drop offs at most suitable
locations around the north shore. A free service for students such
as this would significantly minimize traffic around the 38 schools located
in the district. Being funded by the community, it would be economical
and attractive to students as well as their parents.
The population of North Vancouver is growing at an incresingly fast rate.
From 1991 to 1996 the population has increased by 7%, which is quite significant
considering that within the GVRD a total increase of olny 20% occured during
the same time period. According to the 1996 census, which i accuired
from Bc Stats
, the total population count was 121,893 residents with a population
density of 497.6 per square kilometer. This increasing population
is directly linked to a frustrating morning rush hour for all types of commuters.
A very large number of reisdents live in single family dwellings accessible
largely by small roads. A lot of the areas covered by the North Vancouver
public transit are either too far of a walking distance or simply cost
too much to use every day. A large number of students on the North
Shore today either drive to school themselves, if possible, or get a ride
from their parents. This creates large problem in terms of traffic
congestion, pollution and inconvenience. I believe the proposal for
a school bus service would greatly benefit the community, environment and
everyone individually. Back to Top
