Methodology:
Spatial Problem: To
identify possible new locations for the Molson Indy Vancouver, with consideration
given to landuse, municipality, proximity to urban areas,
proximity to public transport and road networks, size of the area and slope
of the land.

The process used to develop the final map showing possible locations for a permanent Molson Indy Track was a Multi Criteria Evaluation using a Weighted Linear Combination. Initially, I needed to decide what images would be usefull and how I would manipulate them. Referring to the FIVE FACTORS that I previously identified, I decided that the relavant images would be LANDUSE, CITY, GVRD_DEM, MJROADS, VAN_BUS and SKYTRAIN from the S:\355-data\data\gvrd\gen folder.
The LANDUSE image was used to select for the desirable types, those being open/undeveloped and agricultural areas. In addition, it was used to obtain an image that showed the residential and commercial areas in the GVRD. Likewise, the CITY image was used to select for the desired municipalities (Vancouver, West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Richmond and the University Endowment Lands). The Transportation images were used so that the proximity from public transit and major road networks could be taken into account.
Since the ideal location would be on flat land I needed to take slope into consideration. Thus, I used the Digital Elavation Model for the GVRD to calculate a percent gradient of slope in the region.
