Where O Where Do I Open a New Consignment Store in Vancouver?

Introduction:

When picking my topic for this class I wanted to focus on using multiple criteria evaluations in decision making. This is the most interesting aspect of GIS, as it is how this computer system can be applied to numerous projects and applications. I therefore chose a topic that was simple in its design and was easily applicable to my daily life. I wanted to focus more on the types of data manipulations I could do and the various ways data layers could be combined together to get different results. I was also interested in different forms of data collection, and picked a topic that included personal interviews in defining factors/constraints and their relative weights.

For this project I am aiming to find the most ideal location to open a new consignment store in Vancouver.  Consignment stores carry second-hand clothes, and the donators of the clothes get a percentage of the proceeds.  These stores differ from second-hand stores such as Value Village in that there is usually a theme (vintage, funky, contemporary), the clothes are generally in better condition, and most will carry some new lines by local/smaller clothing/jewellery designers.  I felt I would be able to relate to both the data required and the end result of this project.

This project is important to me for a few reasons.  Firstly, I enjoy shopping at consignment stores because of the interesting clothing finds.  There's nothing like wearing a coat from the '40s that you know your Grandma would've loved and you could never find anywhere else.  I also like buying second hand because it means that that piece of material isn't in a landfill, and it's one less new coat made.  By frequenting consignment shops I'm also contributing to small business development, which is something I like to support. Performing this project is giving me an appreciation of some of the aspects involved with opening a small business in Vancouver.
