The costs are in time of travel and depend on distance along the network
as well as the friction surface. The colour scale shows that travelling
from Kahului Airport (after arrival on Maui) it takes much longer to travel
to West Maui coast and far East Maui coast than just south to resorts near
Kihei and Makena, although past Makena the highway ends to the traffic
friction to travel is greater.

Cost-distance from Kahului Airport: "cost-push" algorithm results
Cost-distance from Kahului Airport: "cost-grow" algorithm results
The two algorithms gave similar results when start point was at Kahului, but only the "cost-grow" algorithm worked well for starting point at Makena city. The two locations have a different distribution of places that are relatively close and far. South-East Maui is equally inaccessible from both locations according to this analysis. There are roads there but it takes very long time to drive through them compared to other areas with better road networks. These maps show coastline accessibility relative to different locations. |
