Data
Collection
Because I was required to conduct the spatial analysis using raster layers, the first step of my data collection for this project was to incorporate the appropriate 1996 census data with the matching raster frame.
But first of all I had to select the appropriate census data tables for my analysis.
The 1996 census data of the Greater Vancouver
Region was already accessible from the GIS lab in IDRISI format, so I took
the liberty to review the various available data and narrow down with the
following census data tables:
Table 1: Population, Age, Dwelling | Table 5a: Ethnicity | Table 13: Income by Activity |
From table 1 I collected information on the total 1996 population information by census tracts division in the GVRD region, including the total population age group for children between the age of 15 to 24, as well as the population of never married children, aged 15-24.
From table 5a, I got the tabular result of population with single Chinese ethnicity in the GVRD region; And from table 13, I ended up with the information of average income and the total population who work part time in GVRD.
As I was selecting the appropriate data tables and fields, I realized that I needed to create some extra fields for analysis. For instance, the census data separate the male and female never married children category in Table 1, but I am interested in the total tally of 15-24 age group never married children who stay at home.
So I created a new field called " Never Married Children Total" , and used
the SQL calculator to calculate the new values
for the field, which would be adding the male and female value of Never
Married Children that were between age 15-24 (field V091 and V092), as
indicated from below.
The next step of my data collection was to export the appropriate field into a single value file, again as indicated from the below image, so that the field values of the value file could then be viewed under a match raster frame.
Here is the raster data frame that contained
the census value of Never Married Children, age 15-24 in GVRD regions.
Another raster data frame that contained the census value of average income
in GVRD region
