Join us for an afternoon screening of three short films by Annie MacDonell, presented in conjunction with her solo exhibition at the Audain Gallery, The Beyond Within.
Two videos made in collaboration with Paris-based artist Maïder Fortuné explore how pedagogical roles are destablized by radical forms of intimacy and exchange. OUTHERE (For Lee Lozano) documentation from a 1971 lecture at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design by the late conceptual artist Lee Lozano; in Communicating Vessels, friendship and artmaking become portals through which to escape the isolation of the self. In a third film, Book of Hours, MacDonell explores the creative possibilities of the domestic sphere through a series of visual explorations performed with her young son inside their family home. All three films make unconventional use of image, sound and narration to generate trance-like states of being, which relate back to the psychedelic proposal in The Beyond Within.
The artist will be in attendance for the film screening, and an open participation question and answer conversation will follow. In accordance with SFU’s Covid-19 protocols face masks are recommended.
