Walk: Geometry of Knowing: Derya Akay and Julia Feyrer

This event is being held in conjunction with SFU Gallery's exhibition The Geometry of Knowing.
Walking, talking, sowing, drinking and waiting... will explore cycles of spatial, social and horticultural cultivation with Derya Akay and Julia Feyrer in relationship to their works in the exhibition. Explore, navigate, narrate, observe, move, chat, experience, loop, mull, sprinkle. Rain or shine.
Derya Akay (b. 1988) grew up in Istanbul, Adana (Turkey) and New York. He relocated to Vancouver in 2005, and obtained his BFA from Emily Carr University in 2010. He continues to live and work in Vancouver. Derya's recent solo exhibitions includeBreakfast, Lunch, Dinner & Supper, Centre A (Vancouver, 2014); Painting with Light, Gallery 295 (Vancouver, 2014);anewground, The Apartment (Vancouver, 2013); and Wall blobs, Terasaki gallery (Kofu-shi, Yamanashi, Japan, 2013). His recent group exhibitions include Geometry of Knowing Part I, SFU Galleries (Burnaby, 2015); CASV Emerging Artist Prize Exhibition, Access Gallery, (Vancouver, 2014); Proof 20, Gallery 44 (Toronto, 2013). He is represented by The Apartment, Vancouver.
Julia Feyrer (b. 1982, Victoria, BC) is a filmmaker and artist who lives and works in Vancouver. She graduated in 2010 with a Meisterschülerin from the Städelschule in Frankfurt, Germany. She has recently exhibited Escape Scenes at the Western Front in Vancouver. Other recent exhibitions include (in collaboration with Tamara Henderson), Bottles Under the Influence, at Walter Phillips Gallery, Banff (2013), Alternatives and Opportunities, Catriona Jeffries, Vancouver (2012), Irregular Time Signatures, Johan Berggren Gallery, Malmö (2011) and The Poodle Dog Ornamental Bar, Artspeak, Vancouver (2010). Her work has been included in the following group exhibitions The Intellection of Lady Spider House, Art Gallery of Alberta (2013), Phantasmagoria, Presentation House (2012), Children’s Films, Contemporary Art Gallery, Bielefelder Kunstverein, & International Project Space (2011 2013). Julia is also the co-editor of the audiozine Spoox (www.spooxaudiozine.org) and author of a series of artist books from Perro Verlag press.
