SFU Galleries are dynamic centres for the presentation and interrogation of art practices and ideas. There are three distinct galleries: SFU Gallery on the Burnaby campus, Audain Gallery at the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts in Vancouver, and Teck Gallery at Harbour Centre in Vancouver. The forthcoming Marianne and Edward Gibson Art Museum, on the Burnaby campus, will join this suite of spaces in 2024.
Stewarded by SFU Galleries, the SFU Art Collection includes contemporary and historical works of art from regional, national, and international artists. The SFU Art Collection has grown from its inception in the late 1960s to include more than 5,600 works of art in 2021. The collection is diverse and is an important repository for modern and contemporary works of art regionally and nationally. Approximately 1,000 works of art are shown on SFU campuses in public locations year round. The gallery’s collection is an invaluable resource for study and exhibition.
The Curator of SFU Galleries plans, administrates and executes programs at the Galleries (SFU Gallery, Audain Gallery and Teck Gallery) and offsite locations as opportunities arise. The Curator works in collaboration with local and international institutions as well as neighborhood and community groups to support the use of the Galleries as platforms for public education and dialogue around art and its attendant ideas. The Curator researches, develops, and executes curatorial projects (exhibition, public programming and publications) through on-going involvement and interaction with artists and partners and the SFU Art Collection. The Curator works closely with the Visual Arts program at the School for the Contemporary Arts in the coordination, execution, and promotion of annual undergraduate and graduate student exhibitions at the Audain Gallery, and with the Audain Visual Artists in Residence program for the coordination and organization of all aspects of the Visual Artists in Residence program they relate to the Audain Gallery.
Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree in Visual Art, Curatorial Studies or a relevant discipline and four years recent curatorial experience in an art gallery or a museum or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Thorough knowledge of curatorial theory and practices.
- Thorough knowledge of contemporary art locally, nationally and internationally.
- Knowledge and experience researching and presenting art exhibitions.
- Experience overseeing exhibit production, installation and publicity.
- Excellent budget management skills.
- Excellent research, planning, project management, and organizational skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent supervisory skills.
