Dr. Taco Niet was nominated by Global Affairs Canada to participate in the International Atomic Energy Agency Technical Meeting to Review the IAEA’s Methodologies and Analytical Tools in Vienna, Austria from May 30 to June 2, 2023.  Joined by ~15 other experts from around the world, from countries ranging from the Philippines to Algeria and the United States to Argentina, Dr. Niet provided advice and guidance to the IAEA technical team on tool development and analysis pathways and initiatives. The purpose of the event is to review the IAEA’s suite of modeling and analysis tools and provide input on direction for future development, specifically focussed on the IAEA’s suite of energy systems modelling and analysis tools.

Discussions ranged from current developments and tooling for Climate, Land, Energy and Water systems models, to developments on interfaces and toolpaths, to ideas for new modelling tools. The meeting ended with a summary of recommendations for the IAEA technical team for the development of a work plan for the next year with specific focus areas for each modelling tool. On the last day of the event the Vienna International centre, where the IAEA is based, hosted their annual staff party so Dr. Niet joined in with the IAEA technical team and other country representatives to sample the food and free beer at the party.
