From time to time, you may want to update your printer list; in this case, please run the following commands in order:
cscript c:\windows\vbs_remove_all_network_printers.vbs
cscript c:\windows\vbs_add_my_devices.vbs
How do I add a FAS Network printer to my Windows system which is a member of FASnet?
If you are still using a host binding to FAS domain, please stop and report to helpdesk: these hosts are no longer supported on the network. All FAS binding hosts must be migrated to ADSFU binding asap, especially the Linux hosts.
(Obsolete) instructions:
If you are not the administrator of the computer, you may need to contact helpdesk (or lab admin if you are using a research lab computer) to get the proper driver installed in advance.
Once the printer driver has been installed on the system, you need to add the printer to your windows profile:
- Logon to the Windows system as usual
- Click Windows Start icon, select "Devices and Printers"
- Within the newly opened window, under "Printers and Faxes" section, right click on the blank space and select "Add printer" of the popup menu.
- Within the newly opened "Add Printer" dialog box, click "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer"
- Click "The printer that I want isn't listed"
- Key in the partial path to a printer on a print server (e.g. "\\****\") under "Select a shared printer by name"; please note: all the back-slashes must be used as instructed here.
- Now, you will see bunch of printers listed; pick the one you'd like to use.
- Click "Next" button and watch the installation progresses.
- Please do not set it to your default printer - the default printer should always be a pseudo PDF printer.
- Please select "do NOT share this printer" when prompted.
- Click OK a few times and done.
This will add one printer to your profile; if you want have other printers added to your fleet, please repeat these steps.
How do I print an oversized poster?
The School does not have the equipment to handle oversized printing. Here are two places you may try near Burnaby Campus:

Special topics on printing
Which printers are available for visitors?
Generally speaking, you may print to the printers in TASC1 9206 (the faculty lounge). There are some scenarios:
(not yet available): using your designated csguest account, you could print to SFU_Print and release the job on an SFU Print device.
or:
A) There are USB cables near the printers in TASC1 9206; you could directly hook up the cable between the printer and your laptop, you should be able to print (after you get the printer driver installed).
B) You could use "Remote Desktop Connections" connect to rcga-wints-01.dc.sfu.ca:3389 (using account fas.sfu.ca\csguest?). From this terminal server, you could add printer \\cs-papercut-p.dc.sfu.ca\cs-lounge. Then you could print to this printer.
May I print to the new Multi-Function Devices?
Yes.
But, they must be configured for you.
Please check out the SFU Print section on this page for details.
May I print to ITS printers using SFU printing cards?
No. The printing cards are no longer in service. Please use SFU's new cardless print release system SFU Print instead.
Burnaby campus and Surrey campus
ITS provide Multi-Function devices and printing accounts. The advantages include: you may get the printout when you are on the spot, and you could get the printouts at various locations all around campus.
For faculty and staff only:
To use cardless print release system, please print to "SFU_Print" release the jobs afterwards.
Please check out the official SFU Print page for more details.

Please check out this Q&A for answers
What is the SFU Print?
SFU Print is the University's latest printing, scanning and photocopying service, for faculty and staff.
SFU Print is aiming to improve the user experience, promote sustainability, and help reduce the University's printing costs.
Here are some of the key features and benefits of SFU Print:
- Printing to any SFU Print device: You can print to any SFU Print device located in your department on any campus.
- Secure & Sustainable printing: Print jobs are held securely in the centralized queue until you release them.
- 100% Colour MFD fleet: All SFU Print devices will have colour printing capabilities (defaulted to print in black and white for cost saving measures.)
What do I need to do to print to SFU Print devices?
We are implementing SFU Print for all CMPT faculty and staff. We will give users advance notice and provide assistance every step of the way. But, at this moment, only faculty members and staff could use SFU Print.
First, please locate an SFU Print device on campus with a HID reader (a fob reader)
Then, tap your SFU fob on the HID reader on this device and follow the instructions on the touch screen to associate your fob with your account.
From now on, every time you print to "SFU_Print", you could tap your fob and then release print jobs; photocopy and scan also require authentication / fob-tapping.
While you print, please make sure you print to a printer named "SFU_Print", and the specific Papercut client tool is running.
For any SFU Print device which does not have a HID reader, please always authenticate using the keyboard on the device.
For more details, please check out the official SFU Print Service page.
Which SFU print devices I could use?
In principle, you may print to any printer configured with SFU Print service.
Since the Multi-Function Devices (MFDs) we have are more cost effective than other (smaller / desktop / workgroup) printers, we highly recommend using these devices, which are all configured with SFU Print service.
For CMPT faculty and staff on the Burnaby campus, here are the most convenient SFU Print devices, as you see clearly where they are located:
bby-asb-9975
- the colour MFD in the ASB9976 (access it from ASB 9971) - please note: it is not in the room which its name indicates.
bby-tasc1-9206
- the colour MFD in the lounge (TASC1 9206)
bby-tasc1-9401
- (not available for graduate students who have no staff status) the colour MFD in the common room (TASC1 9401)
For CMPT faculty and staff on the Surrey campus, there are the 3 most SFU Print devices around in rooms SRYE 5131 & SRYE 5020.
Please note these device names. Any service request related to these devices must include these ID names, no exceptions.
How to setup SFU print devices on my Windows workstation?
In short, for any managed Windows workstation on SFU wired network - e.g. an office PC or a research workstation - it is already setup; you could simply print to SFU_Print and use your fob to release print jobs.
If you don't see this printer, please run this command to add all the CMPT printing devices to your profile:
cscript c:\windows\vbs_add_my_devices.vbs
If you are managing the system yourself (or using a laptop), please make sure:
a specific Papercut client tool is running with your SFU credentials set.
print queue \\sfuprint-p.mps.sfu.ca\SFU_Print_non_AD_auth is added to the system.
For detailed instructions, please check out the official SFU Print How-to guides.

How do I report issues regarding SFU Print Devices?
All of the SFU Print devices are under the service contract between SFU and Ricoh. Thus, all issues related to these devices should be re-directed to Ricoh.
When you report issues with these devices, please take a note on the device ID and call the phone number clearly tagged on the device.
The exception: if this device is running out of paper, please email helpdesk with the details.
What is the MPS (Managed Print Services) of SFU?
MPS is now simply called Papercut Service.
The Managed Print Services is one important stage of the SFU computing services. It is a centralized printing solution with accounting.
This service started as part of the partnership between SFU and Konica Minolta, with the purpose to provide multi-function copiers, printers and the MPS for all SFU campuses. Now, Ricoh is the partner for all multi-function devices.
The costs of using MPS devices are lower than using other printing services on campus. The Papercut accounting system is at the frontend of the MPS; all printings on MPS are authenticated, monitored and charged.
For more information, please check out SFU's official web page for MPS.
Who should be using MPS?
The MPS is for everyone in the SFU community.
So, every SFU user could use MPS.
faculty and staff only: please use "SFU Print" service.
for all other people, please use MPS.
What do I need to do to print to MPS printers?
The implementation of MPS involves some technical tasks at the backend. They are transparent to the users but must be done before a user could print or photocopy on a MPS device.
We are implementing MPS for all CMPT users. We will give users advance notice and provide assistance every step of the way.
If you like to print from your own devices to a MPS device (on print server cs-papercut-p.dc.sfu.ca), please check out ITS' Papercut Service for students page. Also, please check out Papercut's official client guide.
For any CMPT user, if you cannot print to MPS MFDs/printers, please contat helpdesk.
Which MPS printers can I use?
In principle, you may print to any printer configured on the MPS.
However, all the Multi-Function Devices (MFD) provided by Konica Minolta have been retired from service - they are replaced by Ricoh MFDs which under new banner SFU Print; only workgroup printers are still available under MPS banner. You could see the list on this page (those devices with "ops" names).
Please pay close attention to the names of these devices. Any service request related to these devices must include these ID names, no exceptions.
If you are in an area (on campus) you are not familiar with and need printouts, please locate a MPS device - there is a tag on the device indicating this. Note down the name of the device and print to this one from your computer.
How to setup MPS printers on my Windows workstation?
In general, when you sign in to a managed Windows workstation, the printers you have access to are available.
If this did not happen, you could run this command to add all the CMPT printing devices to your profile:
cscript c:\windows\vbs_add_my_devices.vbs
If you don't see the specific printer show up, please email helpdesk.

Note: if you do not use Secure Print method regularly, please change the default method back to just "Print", or you have to release the jobs every time.
I don't get a printout when I print to a MPS printer. What should I do?
Here are the steps to carry out some simple diagnostics before contacting helpdesk.
If your are using a Windows computer:
1) Launch a commandline window by run "cmd", within this commandline window, please run
net use \\cs-papercut-p.dc.sfu.ca\share /PERSISTENT:YES /SAVECRED
if it prompts you for username and password, it means you are not connected to the MPS server. Provide the following credentials:
username: ad.sfu.ca\<yourusername>
password: <your SFU Mail password>
2) Check to see if the green "P" icon is presented within the system notification area. If not, please run the Papercut Client application again.
* We highly recommend placing the Papercut Client as part of your Startup menu.
3) Double-click the green "P" icon which in the system notification area. If prompted, provide the following credentials:
username: ad.sfu.ca\<yourusername>
password: <your SFU Mail password>
It is recommended saving the credentials if you are printing from your regular workstation.
4) Double-click the green "P" icon which in the system notification area, and click the link to get to the Papercut site. Please take a note on the funds - no funds, no printing :)
* If you see the value of the funds is negative, don't panic; this is normal for faculty and staff.
5) Remove and re-add the MPS devices. You will find more details on how to add and configure MPS devices on the previous Q&A.
If your are using a RCG Ubuntu system:
1) Check to see if the green "P" icon is presented while you login and is part of your desktop. If not, please contact helpdesk asap.
2) Try to print to the lab printer, the Papercut client shall prompt you for your credentials. If it never prompts or won't accept your credential, contact helpdesk asap.
3) From the Papercut client box, click "Details", then login to the site to see your recent print jobs. If it won't allow you login, contact helpdesk asap.
If you have a self-managed system, we don't have a diagnostic procedure yet.
If you have to go through these diagnostic steps every now and then, please contact helpdesk for assistance.
I have to type in my credentials to print to a MPS printer every time, can this be simplified?
If you are using your own device or a self-managed system, please keep things as-is - change the settings may cause severe security issues.
You may save the credentials for your current logon session on your own designated wired and managed workstation. It should not ask you again.
This is a purposely designed safety feature of Papercut.
How do I report issues regarding MPS Devices?
All of the MPS Devices are under the service contract between SFU and vendors. Thus, all issues related to these devices should be re-directed to the specific vendor.
When you report issues with these devices, please take a note on the device ID (which may start with OPS ...) and call the 1-800 number clearly tagged on the device.
The exception: if this device is running out of paper, please email helpdesk with the details.

How to add SFU printing support to my own Windows laptop?
(In this Q&A, we use Windows system as an example; for other OSes, it is very similar but please do follow each OS' guidelines for adding print queues.)
(the best way) Method 0: You should remotely connect to your wired workstation and print from it.
(Special case) If you are a faculty or staff member, you could connect to rcga-wints-01.dc.sfu.ca:3389 by using "Remote Desktop Connections" and print from it.
If your don't have a desktop workstation, You could ssh into one of RCG's Linux Terminal Servers and print from it.
If you are more familiar with Windows interface, could use "Remote Desktop Connections" connect to CSIL Windows Terminal Server and print from it.
(recommended) Method 1: (faculty and staff only) To use the SFU Print devices; please follow the instructions here:
Prerequisite: please be sure your account has administrative privilege on the laptop so the printer drivers could be loaded properly. Please install the Papercut client on the laptop. You could download the installation package from the How-to guide on SFU Papercut Service for students page.
Preparation: logon as usual, connect to SFU-Secure wireless network
first. Connect to print sfuprint-p.mps.sfu.ca, run the following commands in order:
net use \\sfuprint-p.mps.sfu.ca\ipc$ /del
net use \\sfuprint-p.mps.sfu.ca\ipc$ /user:ad.sfu.ca\yourusername /PERSISTENT:NO
(key in your SFU Mail password)
Since this two commands shall be used to ensure the connection every time you print, please save it as "connect_2_sfuprint.bat" on the desktop for future use.
secondly. Now, let's add SFU Print queue:
Click Windows Start icon, launch "Printers & scanners"
Within the newly opened window, click "Add a printer or scanner"
Click "The printer that I want isn't listed" (this is a MUST!)
Key in the partial path to a printer on an SFU Print server (e.g. "\\sfuprint-p.mps.sfu.ca\") under "Select a shared printer by name"; (all the back-slashes must be used as instructed here.)
Now, you will see bunch of printers listed; pick "SFU_Print_non_AD_auth".
Click "Next" button and watch the installation progresses.
(optional) Please do not set it to your default printer - the default printer should always be a pseudo PDF printer.
Please select "do NOT share this printer" when prompted.
Click OK a few times and done.
*Important* before printing to SFU_Print queue, please make sure the Papercut client is running and a Papercut server is connected.
(recommended) Method 2: To use the MPS printers; please follow the instructions here:
Prerequisite: please be sure your account has administrative privilege on the laptop so the printer drivers could be loaded properly. Please install the Papercut client on the laptop. You should download the installation package by following the How-to guide on the SFU Papercut Service for students page.
Preparation: logon as usual, connect to SFU-Secure wireless network
1. Connect to print server cs-papercut-p.dc.sfu.ca, run the following commands in order:
net use \\cs-papercut-p.dc.sfu.ca\ipc$ /del
net use \\cs-papercut-p.dc.sfu.ca\ipc$ /user:ad.sfu.ca\yourusername /PERSISTENT:NO
(key in your SFU Mail password)
Since this two commands shall be used to ensure the connection every time you print, please save it as "connect_2_papercut.bat" on the desktop for future use.
2. Now, let's add a Papercut printer:
Click Windows Start icon, launch "Printers & scanners"
Within the newly opened window, click "Add a printer or scanner"
Click "The printer that I want isn't listed" (this is a MUST!)
Key in the partial path to a printer on a Papercut server (e.g. "\\cs-papercut-p.dc.sfu.ca\") under "Select a shared printer by name"; (all the back-slashes must be used as instructed here.)
Now, you will see bunch of printers listed; pick the one you'd like to use.
Click "Next" button and watch the installation progresses.
(optional) Please do not set it to your default printer - the default printer should always be a pseudo PDF printer.
Please select "do NOT share this printer" when prompted.
Click OK a few times and done.
This will add one printer to your profile; if you want have other printers added to your fleet, please repeat these steps.
*Important* before printing to a Papercut printer, please make sure the Papercut client is running and a Papercut server is connected.
I'm having trouble adding print queue to my Windows laptop; any suggestions?
In most cases, this has something to do with the "Point and Print Restrictions" setting on the Windows system.
You may want t try the following:
launch gpedit, within the newly opened Local Group Policy Editor window,
navigate on the left pane to
Computer Configuration
Administrative Templates
Printers
on the right pane, a list of various policies show up.
double click on "Point and Print Restrictions", which should be "Enabled" if there is a trouble.
within this dialogbox, under section "Users can only point and print to these servers:"
please add the FQDN for the print server in question as needed, for example: prtsrv1.test.ca
hit the button "Apply" to save the changes.
double click on "Always render print jobs on the server"
change it to "Enabled"
hit the button "Apply" to save the changes.
now, reboot the laptop and try again.
If this workaround does not work for you, please let us know asap.
How to print from a laptop as a faculty member?
On Burnaby campus, a faculty member could print to many devices in ASB and TASC1. Here are some scenarios:
A) ** RECOMMENED ** You could use "Remote Desktop Connections" connect to rcga-wints-01.dc.sfu.ca:3389 (using account ad.sfu.ca\yourusername).
From this terminal server, you could print to \\sfuprint-p.mps.sfu.ca\SFU_Print.
Of course, you could add other printers as needed.
B) You could ssh into one of RCG's Linux Terminal Servers (e.g. rcga-linux-ts1.dc.sfu.ca) and print.
C) You could print to SFU Print queue and release on any SFU Print MFD around campus. Please follow the instructions in previous Q&A to add this queue.
D) There are USB cables near the printers in TASC1 9206; you could directly hook up the cable between the printer and your laptop, you should be able to print (after you get the printer driver installed on the laptop).
F) (under reviewing) You could manually add all printers listed on this page onto your laptop in advance; and before printing, make sure the connections to the servers are established/restored (and make sure the specific Papercut client is running if this a Papercut server is used).
(Please note: most of these printers/MFDs are behind secured doors, please use your fob to gain access.)
How to print from a laptop as a staff member?
It is quite the same for faculty and staff to print - please check out the previous Q&A.
How to print from a laptop as a graduate student?
First of all, please identify which device you would like to print to.
For TAs printing related to the TA appointment, please use the printer "SFU Print", it will charge your printing to the course account. You can release the print job by logging in on any of the Ricoh MFDs on campus intended for employee use such as the one in the TASC1 9401 common room or the once in ASB 10700 FAS reception area. Note that the Ricoh MFD in CSIL is on a different printing system intended for students who are paying from personal funds.
For your research and study, please use the printer in the lab - it could be configured on "Papercut for students'. Please check out more details on this page.
If there is no printer present in the lab, please chat with your supervisor about options.
How to print from a laptop for a visitor?
On Burnaby mountain campus, you may want to print to the printers in TASC1 9206 (the faculty lounge, fob access).
Here are some scenarios:
A) There are USB cables near the printers in TASC1 9206; you could directly hook up the cable between the printer and your laptop, you should be able to print (after you get the printer driver installed).
B) You could use "Remote Desktop Connections" connect to ts.fas.sfu.ca (using account fas.sfu.ca\csguest?). From this terminal server, you could add printer \\cs-papercut-p.dc.sfu.ca\cs-lounge. Then you could print to this printer.
Suddenly, I cannot print to queues on MPS nor "SFU Print", any suggestions?
There are a few causes:
. The Papercut client might be out dated. Please download & install the latest package for specific service again.
. The authentication will fail if the time of the laptop is off by a minute or more. Please make sure the time on the laptop is properly synchronized.
. The driver for the specific print queue might be out dated. Please update it.
known issues
I am not getting a colour printout when I print to a colour printer; what should I do?
For HP printers, this is a known issue with certain version of the Universal Printer Driver; it cannot handle colour printing.
The issue may be resolved by using the latest Universal Printer Driver from HP. Please remove the printer from the list and add it again. This forces the system use the new driver.
I printed a single page, but it shows the job as having 2 pages; what should I do?
The symptoms: when printing an odd number of pages, the print server always generates a job with an even number of pages when the print is set to print "double-sided" or "duplex".
For HP printers, this is a known issue on certain (type of) print servers.
The workaround: you may change the printer to use single-sided finishing as a quick workaround.
I have trouble printing within SIMS; what should I do?
The symptoms: when printing within SIMS, the printout does not reach expected result.
Workaround #1 (verified at 2012.05.28): For Windows users, please follow these guide lines:
- please use IE (Internet Explorer) connect to SIMS
- please double-click within the area you would like to print
- click menu File -> Print...
- select the desired printer (or pseudo/PDF printer)
- click tab "Options"
- make sure "Only the selected frame" is selected
- click Print and keep your fingers crossed.
The tip: if there is a "print friendly" button or link on the page, always use it :)
I printed from a Windows computer but the printout is shifted somehow; what should I do?
(obsolete).
This is a known issue on a decommissioned server. So, please skip ahead.
when print to the samba print server "rcga-bluebell" from a Windows computer; due to incorrect paper size for the print job.
Technical description of the issue: although the printer configured on "rcga-bluebell" is set to use "letter" as the default paper size, the client computer may interpret this value the wrong way. i.e. Windows XP may see it as 11x17.
We are still working on a fix, but here are some workarounds you may try:
Workaround #1: Manually change the paper size of the printer to desired one - every time you print. Please note: only change the "printer preferences" won't work for most of the applications.
Workaround #2: upgrade the computer OS to Windows 7.
I scanned a lot of pages on the MFD and sent to my SFU Connect email address, but I did not get the scanned file nor got any error message; what happened?
The issue is: the scanned file is too big. The SFU Mail server rejected the huge attachment.
The workaround: please always scan to smaller files. e.g. scan 20 pages or less to a file, send the email and then next 20 pages and so on.
You may want to use "Compact PDF" document type for your scanning. This will generate PDF files in 1/4 of regular size. And you may also select 200dpi to further reduce the file size. Please try out a few pages to see if the resulting file is satisfactory.
I scanned a few pages on the MFD but the text in the PDF file is too tiny to read; what should I do?
In general, this means the resolution of the scan is not high enough to produce clear text.
You could try the following:
- select higher resolution for scanning: 600x600dpi would be a good idea.
- select the PDF instead of Compact PDF for output file.
Please note: use these options will generate huge PDF files. So, please scan & send each individual page, page by page - you could use tools to stitch these PDFs to a single PDF file on your computer later.
I printed a simple PDF file to a printer, but the printer shows "Insufficient Memory" error. What should I do?
In general, this means the printer could not handle the print job.
You may try these steps:
- If you don't need colour printout, please try to select "grayscale" and print again.
- You may first generate a new PDF file by printing to "Save as PDF" (the pseudo printer); and then print the newly generated PDF file. Please select "grayscale" if no colour printout is needed.
- Print a bigger/newer printing device, e.g. a Ricoh MFD.
I sent a job to a printer but the printer showed no sign of receiving data - how can I fix this?
First of all, please note: we are printing through print servers - so a few seconds delay is expected.
Here are some of the steps you may take to diagnose the printing issues:
(1) from your computer, try to ping this printer, if the printer is alive and there is no packets loss, proceed to step 2; otherwise:
please power cycle the printer and ping the printer again from your computer.
if it is successful, the printer should be printing now.
otherwise:
please power cycle the switch (which this printer is attached to) and power cycle the printer again.
ping the printer again from your computer,
if it is successful, the printer should be printing now.
if you still cannot ping the printer, please email us.
(2) double-click the printer icon on the system notification area
if you see the printer's status is "paused", please email us so we could make it active.
if you see the earliest job of this printer is "printing..." but the printer does nothing:
please try to cancel the job and the next job should be printed now. (investigate the stuck job is recommended.)
if it still does not print, email us.
Of course, there are some other anomalies, please email us when those occur.
Just a reminder: please make sure your lab's acronym and the printer name are clearly stated on the subject line of your message.
I cannot print to our lab printer from Linux workstation. What should I do?
This is an known issue - if this printer is configured on a specific Papercut server.
The current workaround is to remote into the CSIL Windows Terminal Server, add the printer to your printer fleet and print to it - use the detailed instructions on this page. Just remember: logoff from this server when you are done since this server is shared by many.
For any other case, please email helpdesk.
