To the Prairie to the Pacific: A History of Muslims in Western Canada
CCMS was excited to have Hassam Munir join us (via Zoom) for our last Islamic History Month event, "To the Prairie and Pacific: A History of Muslims in Western Canada"!
When many Muslim immigrants arrived at the ports in eastern Canada in the early 20th century, they were often advised to keep moving west. This session will revisit early Muslim experiences in the Prairies and the Pacific coast – as peddlers, journalists, murder mystery solvers, musicians, and so much more.
About Hassam:
Hassam Munir is a history researcher and educator. He is a fellow at the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research, founder of the iHistory multimedia project, and an MA candidate in History at the University of Toronto. His research work focuses on Muslims’ social and cultural history, the history of Muslims in the Americas, and ways to make Muslim history accessible to the public through the use of new digital technologies.
