Preparation, Attendance, Participation (10%)

includes reading preparation and active engagement in seminar discussions

full attendance for all course meetings is expected; a student needing to miss all or part of a
class must notify the module instructor

Seminar Module Presentations (15% each, for a total of 30%)

plan for 15-20 minutes, followed by discussion

presentations are intended to focus on the case study readings, relating them to the

theoretical readings for the week.  The module instructor will provide students with further guidance regarding selection and topics.  Students will sign up for their seminar presentations in the first course meeting.

a one-page outline of the presentation should be distributed to members of the class

Seminar Module Papers (20% each, for a total of 40%)

these short papers (5-7 pages) must meet the criteria of a coherent, well-argued critical essay.  The argument should focus theoretical and historical concerns of the module on the primary text the student has selected.  Students are encouraged to develop their papers out of their seminar presentation topics, and should take account of issues and ideas raised during class discussion.  In addition, students are strongly encouraged to discuss their essay topic ideas with the module instructor.

papers for module 1 are due October 29; papers for module 2 are due December 3

one of these essays will form the basis of the final web presentation

 Web Site Presentation (15%)

this assignment entails reconceptualizing one of the seminar module papers for presentation on the web, and to the class, as a scholarly research site.  The class presentations will take place Dec. 10, one week after the end of term; the final version of the web site is due the following week, Dec. 17.

this assignment necessitates rethinking the ideas in the paper in a visual format and for a different medium.  To that end, the web sites must incorporate on-line resources for informational, illustrative, and critical purposes.

the sites will be evaluated by both course instructors.
