Mile 0 marker, Victoria, BC.
Trevor and I at the start of his cross-Canada journey: the Mile 0 marker near Beacon Hill Park in Victoria.

My nephew Trevor graduated from SFU in June of 2007, and as a post-graduation adventure, decided to cycle across Canada. He was kind enough to allow me to join him for the first few legs, as far as Kamloops. Trevor kept a blog of his journey here; what follows is my own brief take on the part we did together.

The trip began in Victoria, BC, on June 3. Actually, I suppose it began when J dropped us at the Tsawwassen ferry terminal; the cycling started when we got to the other side, with an easy ride into Victoria along the Lochside Trail. I love this route: flat, avoiding all the busy roads, through some nice woodsy sections and fields, leading you right into the centre of the city.

After one night in Victoria with my brother Chris and family Trevor & I caught a morning ferry from Brentwood Bay to Mill Bay, then made our way via Cowichan Bay, skirting Duncan, through Crofton to Chemainus where we caught the ferry to Thetis for a second night. Day 3 was the longest: Chemainus to Nanaimo (via Cedar backroads) and then across to Horseshoe Bay, through West Vancouver (via Marine Drive) and Burnaby (the Barnett Highway), ending with a stiff uphill climb to end at Trevor's family home in Port Moody.
