This is a list of available field trips.

Choosing your field trips

As well as the ballooning field trip, there are 8 other possible field trips. Students have now made their choices for trips in which they are interested.

Here are the local arrangements.

1. Hot Air Balloon - Ron Ydenberg (ydenberg@sfu.ca)
No Ballooning Today (Nov 3)

It seems unlikely that there will be further flights this year. There is still a small possiblility, provided we again get either a few days without rain, or a cold snap in December, where show will brush off the balloon.

Participants should be at the Langley airport by the appropriate time. Allow at least 45 minutes to travel there at that time. To get there, follow #1 east over the Port Mann bridge, turn south at 200 st., east on Fraser Hwy, and north on 216th. The balloon ride should be finished by 5:30 or 6:00. Since ballooning is highly dependent on weather, we will be making arrangements `on the fly'. You should check this page, or call Ron Ydenberg (SSB 8155, 291-4282) for final details. We should know each day by noon whether things are "on".

Descriptions of Other Field Trips

Here are the local arrangements.

2. Environment Canada Monitor Station at Burnaby Lake - Barbara Frisken (frisken@sfu.ca)
We will visit this site to see atmospheric monitoring instruments in use and talk to staff from Environment Canada about various monitoring programs. At this site, rainfall, wind speed and wind direction are monitored. As well, there are samplers which collect rain water and air samples which are later tested for particulates and organics.

3. Greater Vancouver Regional District Monitor Station in Port Moody - Barbara Frisken (frisken@sfu.ca)
There are up to 20 instruments in use at this site, most controlled remotely and checked weekly by GVRD staff. In particular, the GVRD attempts to monitor SO2, CO2, ozone, particulates, solar radiation, and hydrocarbons.

4. Pacific Weather Center - Barbara Frisken (frisken@sfu.ca)
This field trip involves a visit to the local office of Environment Canada responsible for weather forecast and warnings for the coastal region of British Columbia.

5. BC Hydro Power Control Center and Microwave Tower - Luis Goddyn (goddyn@sfu.ca)
Right on campus there is an impressive control center for monitoring the BC power grid--looks like the Starship Enterprise. The microwave tower is adjacent to the control center. Although slightly tangential to the course material, both operation rely on meteorological monitoring, and it is very close!

6. Iona Island Sewage Plant - Ron Ydenberg (ydenberg@sfu.ca)

7. Howe Sound Paper - Ron Ydenberg (ydenberg@sfu.ca)

8. Pacific Environmental Science Centre - Derek Sutton (dsutton@sfu.ca)
The Centre houses chemical analysis, toxicology and microbiology laboratories, plus mobile labs and equipment used in Environment Canada's monitoring, regulatory and environmental science programs. The 40 federal and provincial scientists there conduct field surveys, inspections and investigations, and respond to environmental emergencies. The Centre is a new building (opened in 1995) and is the only government environmental laboratory in Pacific Canada. It's laboratories include constant environment rooms so as to simulate a wide range of coastal, marine and sub-arctic environments.

9. Xenon Industrial Air Quality Testing - Derek Sutton (dsutton@sfu.ca)
