For information onthe 2004 election, click here. For the 2000 general election, there were 11 political parties registered. The Christian Heritage Party had been registered but failed to field the minimum 50 candidates necessary to retain its registered status. The parties' web sites can be very useful sources of information about their policies, leaders, and candidates. If you visit a number of these party sites you will see that some parties are much more successful than others in presenting information voters may need; even some of the major parties could do better! Elections Canada has come under fire after local
Returning Officers initially disqualified a total of 17 candidates fielded by the major parties.
The Tories were hardest hit, with 10 candidates' papers rejected, while the Alliance
and NDP lost 4 & 3 respectively. These disqualifications leave the Liberal as the only
party to have candidates in all 301 constituencies.
Altogether, Elections Canada accepted 1808 candidates
for the 2000 elections.
