Congratulations to this year's Psychology Undergraduate Award winners! These awards honour psychology students for their academic excellence, outstanding leadership, and service within the community.

Hilary Tsui

  • Mary Batchelor Memorial Award

Hilary recently graduated with a BA (Honours with Distinction) in Psychology and Communications. She has been heavily involved in volunteering, both at SFU and in the Metro Vancouver community, since her third year of university. She joined the Psychology Student Union in 2020 as a Departmental Representative and later worked her way up to Vice President in 2022 (a position she held until she graduated). She is currently working as a Harm Reduction Attendant at Three Bridges Community Health Centre and also helps provide healthy, vegan meals to people in the Downtown Eastside through Vancouver Food Not Bombs. Hilary will be attending graduate school in the fall and endeavours to use her research to better understand, and develop effective programs to help, Vancouver's most vulnerable populations.

Jane Landsky

  • Mary Batchelor Memorial Award

Jane has recently completed her BA (First Class with Distinction) in Psychology, with minors in Counselling and Human Development, and Archaeology. During her time at SFU, Jane spent several years volunteering in the Close Relationships Lab, starting as a research assistant and ending as assistant lab coordinator and lead project manager. Jane was also involved with Battered Women's Support Services, Tri-City Transitions Society, Multiplied by One, Kinsmen Lodge, Eagle Ridge Hospital, and SFU's Academics First during the course of her degree. In the fall of 2024, Jane will begin her master's degree in Counselling Psychology at the University of British Columbia.

Kalum Kumar

  • CPA Certificate of Academic Excellence
  • PSYC Alumni Honours Award

Kalum recently completed his BA (Honours First Class with Distinction) in Psychology. He is currently a research assistant in Dr. Lara Aknin's Helping and Happiness Lab, with whom he also completed his honours project. Kalum's honours thesis suggested that peer-based support in the form of advice can promote the well-being and belonging of students at SFU. Additionally, Kalum was one of two recipients of the Governor General's Silver Medal, having achieved one of the highest scholastic standing upon graduation from a bachelor's degree program. In the future, Kalum hopes to attend graduate school in social psychology with the goal of understanding how we can foster a happier world for all.

Marc Gelineau

  • CPA Certificate of Academic Excellence

Marc recently defended his Honours thesis under the supervision of Dr. Hali Kil in the All Families Lab, where he investigated the ways that recollections of parenting influences young adults' social functioning, and the effects of mindfulness on this relationship. During his time at Simon Fraser University, he has been involved in Dr. Kil's All Families Lab, Dr. Douglas' Douglas Research Lab, and Dr. Cairncross' CORTECH Lab. While he will soon be graduating, he plans to continue his research in the three labs here at SFU in order to gain the experience needed for clinical psychology graduate programs.

Mayuko Arai

  • CPA Certificate of Academic Excellence
  • PSYC Alumni Honours Award

Mayuko is completing her BA Honours in Psychology with a strong passion for neuroscience. She has been dedicating her efforts to research in Dr. Brianne Kent's lab as a research assistant and as a USRA recipient, focusing on sleep and circadian rhythm disruptions associated with Alzheimer's disease. Her honours project investigated the effects of the antidepressant drug Trazodone on sleep in mice, exploring its potential as an Alzheimer's disease intervention. Based on the promising results, she is currently expanding the project to assess the impact of chronic Trazodone administration, using a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. Mayuko deeply appreciates the mentorship of Dr. Kent and the support from lab members. She plans to pursue graduate studies in neuroscience and is thrilled to further expand her knowledge and skills in this field.

Ruby recently graduated with a BSc in Behavioural Neuroscience and will soon complete an Arts and Social Sciences Post Baccalaureate Diploma. Over these past few years, he has worked as a teaching assistant in the Psychology department, a research assistant in Dr. Slaney's Studies in Methodology and Philosophy of Psychological Science (SMPPS) Lab, and as a data manager in Dr. Bernstein's Lifespan Cognition Lab.
