The stability of AdS spacetime in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity
Recently it has been argued that spherically symmetric AdS spacetime is unstable against the formation of black holes for a large class of arbitrarily small perturbations. Einstein's action undoubtedly acquires higher order corrections at short distance scales. The simplest of these, the so-called Gauss-Bonnet term, is second order in curvature and yields equations of motion that are second order in derivatives of the metric. I will present results of the numerical analysis of spherically symmetric massless scalar field collapse in five dimensional AdS spacetime in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The change in dynamics at short distances and high curvature has intriguing consequences for black hole formation and the stability of AdS spacetime.
