This file covers what I call the 'Fourth Period', from roughly 1972 to 1978.
Brill 798 was retired by 1963 when the system was decimated. Some fans bought it and stored it in a field waiting for a museum to be built. The museum was never built. King County Metro acquired 798 and restored it to its initial colouring. Metro needed every trolleybus that it could get its hands on. 798 was restored including its original paint scheme that many of us old timers sadly miss. Here it is Jefferson Station on the last day of original system in January 1978. Metro tore down the original overhead and replaced it with new overhead. They also reinstated five lines that the Seattle Transit System had dieselized. They also created some new trolleys lines, rerouted a couple more, and extended a few lines. 798 was then retired and kept as a museum piece. Photographer unknown. Twin Coach 612 going south on Third Ave. crossing Union St. on Route 12 E. Cherry. A few years earlier both 12s went up Pike St. turning right onto 5th Ave. Many years earlier both turned onto 7th Ave. True Seattlites (old-timers) will fondly remember the revered Embassy Theater, visible at rear of the trolley. . Twin Coach 611 southwest bound on Union St. just past 3rd Ave. Behind the trolley is the structure that housed the revered and long gone Embassy Theater. This theater was somewhat unique in that there was a box-office on 3rd Ave. and another on Union St. located just in front of the trolley. Photo by Donald Galt. 1977. Twin Coach 633 at Jefferson Garage. Posing by the trolley is 'LHS', a former driver who started in 1968. It is signed for 7 Rainier -- Prentice. This route was dieselized in 1963. The roll-signs were never removed. 633 was sold to the Orange Empire Railway Museum. In the second photo, LHS is posing in front of 633 at the Museum. To its left is Pullman-Standard 656, which was also sold the OERM. Photographer is unknown. The first photo is circa 1976, the second one is unknown. Courtesy Tom's Trolley Bus Pictures and LHS. Twin Coach 927 appears to be loading passengers at the stop in front of the Bon Marché. This seems odd as the trolley will lay over for a few minutes one block away on Pike St. at 3rd Ave. The destination sign reads Martin St. This is the outer destination, not the downtown installation. Driver's sometimes would turns the destination signs early. Photo by Paul Weyrich. 1977.

Twin Coach 626 on route 9 Broadway at the loading island on Pike St. at 4th Ave. The trolley in the background will move into the curbside loading area. The loading island was built when Pike St. was converted to one-way street operation. The east bound trolleys on Pine St were shifted over the Pike ST, thus creating the need for a double loading island to accommodate the busiest loading zone in the city. Photo by Paul Weyrich. 1977.

Twin Coach 621 on route 14 Summit is now loading on the outer loading area. The loading area was removed when Metro began renewing the trolley system in 1978. Some lines were shifted over to 3rd Ave. and then going up to First Hill via Seneca, Madison, or Jefferson Sts. Photo by Paul Weyrich. 1977. Jefferson Garage was closed in the early 1980s after the trolley fleet was moved to the newly rebuilt Central Base (Atlantic Garage).

Brill 798 in the first Day of service after rebuilding, at 34th Ave. and E. Union St. in November 1974. Unidentified Twin (6xx) about to pass 798 whose poles are on the wrong set of wires. A layover set of wires was constructed so a short turning route 2 trolley could pass by a trolley at the end of route 12 E. Cherry. NO 1974. The Twin appears to be &signed for 2 West Queen Anne, although its terminal is on E. Union St. at 33rd Ave. Drivers would sometimes change to destination sign before the trolley reached the terminal for that run. Today the 12 E. Cherry is route 3 (east). 798 ran in regular service until JA 1978 when the system was temporarily closed for rebuilding. 798 was then retired and given to MEHVA. Photo by Wayne Hom. NO 1974.
