My personal experience on Nokia Lumia 920 (Windows Phone 8) on Rogers network
I just got this on December 6, 2012.
Let's start with bad news.
(Hi, people in Nokia, Microsoft and Rogers, please listen to the users and improve as you see money flows in.)
What I don't like
Components | Pitfalls | who |
the buttons on the side | it could be flushing the surface to reduce accidental clicking | Nokia |
Internet Explorer | it seems I could not use folders to categorize the Favorites items | Microsoft |
Internet Explorer | how to set the home page? bring it back now! |
Microsoft |
Internet Explorer | is not compatable with Adobe CQ5 pages, could not open a page for editing | Microsoft |
Internet Explorer | (FIXED)could not view bing map, google map etc map web page. |
Microsoft |
Internet Explorer | the left button could be setup to do multiple things, like the "." of the keyboard - hold it for more than 1 sec, there should be more options. | Microsoft |
Internet Explorer | does NOT work with Zimbra's calendar: could NOT alter an appointment (to be fair, the Safari on iPAD2 does NOT do this either) |
Microsoft/Zimbra? |
could not lock the orientation | Microsoft / Nokia?
text message app | after a comma, it won't auto add a space | Microsoft |
Microsoft | ||
the store app | where to check each app's version | Microsoft |
the store app | why game is not here, why music is separated? there are 3 locations! |
Microsoft |
the settings app | what is the order? what a mess! | Microsoft |
the nokia map |
why keep asking for using my location?! in the settings, I said NO! | Microsoft/Nokia |
the nokia map | the traffic data is NOT complete, useless |
Microsoft/Nokia |
the nokia map | seems there is no layer? and the "traffic" button is so NOT obvious (is it on or not?) | Microsoft/Nokia |
the nokia map | why not bing map? | Microsoft |
the update process | why the update process shows different names then my apps? e.g. phone+ message as one app for updates, but it is an app under "settings". |
Microsoft |
the update process | where is the "recent updated apps list" or "update history"? | Microsoft |
there is no good PDF reader | Adobe?
the battery % indicator | the battery percentage is not showing during the charging on the start screen |
Nokia / Microsoft |
the compartment for sim card | when i dropped the phone for the first time, the damage is on the corner which holds the sim card. The impact basically knocked the card out and deformed the slot! I have to file a lot of plastic away before I could put the sim card back in! Please use stronger plastic/polymer! | Nokia |
the outer structure | when an owner dropped the phone for the first time, the impact point is the corner which holds the sim card. The impact basically knocked the card out and deformed the slot and the outer strucure of the phone! At this moment, there is a gap between the frame and the glass screen. Have to file a lot of plastic away before put the sim card back in! Please use stronger plastic/polymer! |
Nokia |
battery life | it drains completely overnight (7 hours) from full charge - culprit: if there is digitial connection, some thing running on the phone will use up all the jiuce! | Microsoft |
It is a split (for better or for worse)
components | positive | negative |
very small number of applications | concentrated | are you kidding? |
What I like
components | |
input methods | there are many methods could be downloaded easily |
internet explorer | could display PDF content within browser window natively |
The missing (or needs serious improvement) Apps
App | Comments | who should do it |
PDF reader (offline) | basically, it is super useless: it does NOT do these: (be able to display contents, not reading PDF files on the phone) |
Microsoft |
Task Manager | basically, Microsoft, you shouldn't resume people will follow instructions and guide lines to write apps. Please provide a tool to kill all non-essential apps if the user choose to. Please note: this is not a scheduler, it is equivalent to Windows system's "taskmgr.exe". | Microsoft |
The things I read on the internet and my expericence with them
other people's complains | my experience |
battery drain | not happen to me |
NFC(near field communications) | it is set to on, and no overheat issue, no battery drain issue |
overheat | not happen to me |
About the Windows Phone SDK
Where is the offline/network installer? (only available through MSDN subscription?)
Why there are lots of restrictions on developing using FREE Visual Studio Express?
Why need Windows 8 to develop Windows (Phone) 8 apps?
People in Microsoft, did you build Windows 8 on Windows 8? No!
