How are Course Outlines Created?

The course outlines for each academic term are automatically created six months before the term begins and made available at www.sfu.ca/outlines. These outlines contain basic information gathered from SFU databases. If an outline requires additional information, you can add it using the Outlines app.

Disclaimer: The course outlines listed at www.sfu.ca/outlines are generated from SIMS, the Academic Calendar, and scheduling and HR databases. If your course outline is missing, or the outline content is incorrect, please contact your departmental administrator. Changes may take up to three days to appear in www.sfu.ca/outlines.

The Outlines app allows you edit and activate outlines that will be listed at www.sfu.ca/outlines or displayed on your departmental website. It does this in three main stages:

  1. Editing the Outline
  2. Reviewing the Outline
  3. Activating the Outline

1. Editing the Outline

From the Outlines app (outlines.sfu.ca), instructors and departmental administrators find the outline they want to edit. By default, instructors will have access to their own course outlines. To speed up the editing process, outlines can be built from existing ones. Once the outline is finished, it is submitted to the manager — usually the departmental administrator.

Note: Anyone needing to edit an outline will be assigned the editor role. This gives them permission to edit the outline content. Other roles, like the manager role, provide access to additional features.

2. Reviewing the Outline

When an outline is finished, the manager will be notified via email. After the outline is reviewed, they can ask the editor to make further changes, edit the outline themselves, and activate the outline.

3. Activating the Outline

When an outline is activated, it will update the outline at www.sfu.ca/outlines.
