Unemployment

Unemployment was lowered from age 16 to age 15 due to restrictions in the British Columbian Census. Additionally there is no upper age limit such as 64 in the Canadian Census data.

·      Total population 15 years and over that is in the labour force             (20% sample)

·      Total population 15 years and over that is in the labour force but unemployed (20% sample)

Youth Unemployment

Youth unemployment was altered for the calculations for the GVRD. Youth unemployment was regarded as unemployment of people between 15 and 24 years of age.

·      Total population 15 years and over that is in the labour force             (20% sample)

·      Total population between 15 and 24 years of age that is in the labour force but unemployed (20% sample)

Overcrowding

The calculation of overcrowding compared to the original SDD index followed the same procedure as the other indices and utilized the VB application.

Lone parents

While the original SDD index uses the percentage of residents in lone parent households, the British Columbia Census identifies the percentage of lone parent headed households among all families.

·      Total number of census families in private households (20% Sample Data)

·      Total female parent lone-parent families (20% Sample Data)

·      Total male parent lone-parent families (20% Sample Data)

Unskilled Workers

Unskilled labourers classification was measured by:

·      Total labour force 15 years and over by occupation (20% Sample Data)

·      Cashiers (Total Numbers, 20% Sample Data)

·      Occupations in food and beverage service (Total Numbers, 20% Sample Data)

·      Occupations in protective services (Total Numbers, 20% Sample Data)

·      Occupations in travel and accommodation, including attendants in recreation and sport (Total Numbers, 20% Sample Data)

·      Trades helpers, construction and transportation labourers and related occupations (Total Numbers, 20% Sample Data)

·      Primary production labourers (Total Numbers, 20% Sample Data)

·      Labourers in processing, manufacturing and utilities (Total Numbers, 20% Sample Data)

Elderly Households

The percentage of elderly living alone was calculated as a percentage of all elderly using:

·      Total number of persons 65 years and over (20% Sample Data)

·      Number of persons 65 years and over living alone (20% Sample Data)

Lacking Amenities

We regarded lacking amenities as the distance to schools and hospitals using centroids created in ArcGIS. Percentage values were measured using the average distance to each amenity.

·              Distance to hospitals in meters;
