SUSTAINABLE VEHICLES AND ENGINE SYSTEMS
We focus on eliminating net greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. As there is no single solution for all vehicles and regions, we are pursuing all promising approaches by using existing vehicle technology and fuel distribution infrastructure to overcome barriers and accelerate the transition to low-carbon transportation. Low-carbon gaseous fuels (e.g., renewable natural gas, sustainably generated hydrogen, etc.) can dramatically lower emissions when used in optimized, high-efficiency engines, combined with advanced hybrid-vehicle powertrains and low-loss fuel systems.
RESEARCH AREAS OF INTEREST
Our team is using experimental and numerical tools to assess key vehicle, engine, and fuel-system technologies. Current research activities include engine and vehicle simulation; basic combustion research using high-speed optical methods; and gaseous-fuel compression technology assessments. Engine research will focus on understanding how to accommodate varying levels of renewable fuels in a flexible, high-efficiency engine system.
