Dr. Joanna Ashworth is the Director of Professionals Programs and Partnerships in the Faculty of Environment at Simon Fraser University. She is a research associate with the Pacific Water Research Centre at SFU, a senior Dialogue Associate with the Wosk Centre for Dialogue, and a researcher with the SSHRC-funded project Participedia.net In her early career Joanna was a project officer with the United Nations World Food Programme and has worked in Bolivia and Colombia extensively in community economic development and women's leadership.
Prior to her current role she was the Director of Dialogue Programs at SFU’s Centre for Dialogue for ten years where, among the many programs she designed, she founded the Certificate in Dialogue and Civic Engagement. She currently teaches and mentors professionals in that program.
As an educator and researcher, Joanna’s focus is on creative innovations in democratic participation, community engaged green infrastructure, including rain gardens, and public dialogue on climate change solutions. Joanna has directed and produced numerous documentaries and dramas over the years, including her most recent film called “Women Bending the Curve on Climate Change.” In her spare time she loves to experiment with permaculture methods on her 5-acre farm in Gibsons.
