Teaching Innovations in the General Chemistry Laboratory
Wednesday, October 16, 2024
SSB 7172 @ 3:30 p.m.
Host: Dr. Patty Somers
Abstract
Teaching a class full of students how to work in a chemistry laboratory is hard. How do you give them the attention and direction they need all at once? And how do you give them an authentic experience of what it is like to do research? These things happen naturally in research labs where one student conducts novel experiments while being mentored by a more senior researcher. But teaching labs do not have the resources to support one-on-one mentoring or to allow for completely open-ended exploration. This talk will explore ways in which technology and classroom practices can be used to bridge the gap between chemical education in teaching laboratories and the mentorship model used in research labs.
Biography
Krista Kobylianskii did her undergraduate degree and PhD in Chemistry in British Columbia at UBCO and UVic respectively. From there, she conducted postdoctoral studies at the University of Melbourne in Australia and ETH Zurich in Switzerland. Her research focused on the unconventional use of mass spectrometry to interrogate reaction intermediates in metal catalyzed transformations. Krista currently works at Rice University in Houston Texas as an Assistant Teaching Professor where she develops and tests new teaching methods for the General Chemistry Laboratory.
