Booking your Colloquium

The information listed below and the accompanying Prospectus should be submitted two weeks before the proposed Colloquium date.

From the Archaeology Graduate Handbook:

As part of ARCH 876 Research Design, PhD students will draft their thesis prospectus in consultation with their committee. The final document, once completed to the satisfaction of the senior supervisor, will be circulated to all faculty members at least one week prior to the presentation of the colloquium. The prospectus will be distributed by the Graduate Program Assistant.

The graduate colloquium is a public presentation intended to serve the following functions:

  • To inform the department of a graduate student’s research plans;
  • To allow the student to benefit from the collective knowledge and critical opinion of the department in planning and conducting their research;
  • To provide training in professional oral presentation.
  • To contribute to the departmental community.

The oral presentation should last approximately 20–25 minutes, followed by questions and comments. Faculty present at the colloquium meet after the question period to provide the supervisor and student an evaluation of the colloquium and research proposal. Colloquia are graded as S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory).

Any major change in thesis topic or research design requires the consent of the entire supervisory committee and the presentation of a new prospectus and colloquium.
