This
page has links to interesting, fun, cute or otherwise worthwhile things (to
have a look at) that involve spatial thinking and communicating. Take a look!
If you discover something you think others in the class
might like, send it to one of the TAs or the Instructor and we'll add it
to the list. We'd like to add your name as the "discoverer" of the
link: let us know if this is ok when you send the link.
Buxton talks about sketching in design
(He's the guy who does the "Tape Drawing" sketching software you will be seeing in
our sketching lecture. He is truly one of the 'software-for-design'
leaders. The clip is from a lecture he delivered a year or so ago at
Stanford. There's a LOT of information on a LOT of related
topics; all of it's cool ... and as you work through SIAT's years and
go out into the world, you'll likely revisit this clip many, many
times.. It's a long clip, about an hour and a half, but worth it!
Life-size Lego "big rig": 1:1 scalse truck made from
250,000 bricks
Making awesome stuff
with 3D printing (www.shapeways.com) When you move on to IAT 337 and
other courses, you'll have a chance to use SIAT's 3D printers.
This video clip shows some very, very cool stuff that would be
just impossible any other way!
Rube Goldberg device one
of the 'classic' such, using Honda parts (Rube Goldberg device =
a very complicated collection of mechanical linkages that in the end
accomplishes something very simple or amusing).
World's tiniest V12 engine. Shows construction and operation of a real, but tiny, V12
internal-combustion engine. Compare this to the CAD model shown in an early lecture!
Lego Turing Machine: if you're into the fundamentals of computers, this is an amazing demo.
The End of the Computer as We Know It
- Corning Glass' vision of ubiquitous computing and ubiquitous
displays, really spatial thinking of a very high order. The folks
at MSR and at Apple are working on things like this.
Honda's "The Power of Dreams" celebrates 65
years of ideas that grow from simple concepts.
The Writer Automaton: an amazing example of spatial thinking and a very, very large collection of cams driving, ultimately, a pen!
Parbuckling the Concordia: spatial thinking, and a whole bunch of superb engineering, help right the partially sunken cruise ship Concordia.
Augmented Reality to aid spatial thinking:
NGRAIN overlays CAD model with parts info on live video image on
tablet. Nice example of advanced computer use to aid spatial
thinking application. And NGRAIN is a Vancouver company!
Amazon's amazing warehouse system: 'billions and billions' of products stored, found and shipped. An amazing system ... of applied spatial thinking!
