The fashion magazine spread was created to practice setting types and imagery. In a team of three, we set titles, form typography, collected images, and generate typeset. We chose fashion and focused the area in denim. As the art director, my role in this project was to gather possible ideations, make major design decisions and provide technical support.

Intention

In this project, we intended to create a magazine spread regarding geometric shapes and dynamics in fashion. We attempted to provide a rich visual experience to the readers in our greyscale magazine spread. Thus we chose denim and displayed its varieties and possibilities in our spread. We further used thin lines to enrich the pages and guide the reader throughout the spread.

Challenges

The most challenging part of this project was to generate a unify and strong art direction from our different spreads, aesthetic judgment was the major problem that we faced. The subtitles we made had limited our choice for images, especially those for “History of Denim”. Thus we recreated some of the subtitles that gave better outcomes to our spread. I also adjusted the colour tone of the images to increase the consistency of our work. In terms of readability, we sought feedback from different stakeholders like instructors and peers to ensure the flowing between the paragraphs are clear.

Outcomes

Leadership skill was what I have gained in this project, the importance of balance various opinions and maintain a pleasant atmosphere in the team. I learnt to take effective adjustments, cope with disagreements and lead our team to tackle difficult design challenges. Instead of overly dispute some extremely decision-making, adopting peer’s ideas into a new design might give a better result. This project had strengthened my confidence in leadership and art direct. I learnt to be sensitive not only to the readers that we were aimed to design for, but also to each of the teammates, and understand the design decisions they made. I believe that succeeding to create a communication platform for the team is the most important aspect of being a leader. I am keen to be a leader who is supportive and innovative enough to back-up my teams.
