River and Trail Outfitters - Interactive Map.
This map is an interactive online map for River and Trail Outfitters. The purpose is to highlight the sites that are important to the company and their guests.
To make this map, I used QGIS, DreamWeaver, and notepad, along with MapQuest and Leaflet. I started with creating the map itself using MapQuest and Leaflet by copying code from MapQuest's developer site (http://developer.mapquest.com/web/documentation/plugins/leaflet/v0.1/map) to load a map. Next I set the center point and zoom level for my map. After that I opened my shapefiles from lab 3 into QGIS, where I could re-save them as geojson files. Next I opened the geojson files in a text editor, and copied the code into new JavaScript files in DreamWeaver. I then added the features to my map by adding code to the HTML document for this page. Finally, I created a style JavaScript file to change the appearance of the line, and I added code to change the shape/color of the pointers.
To create this map I used HTML and JavaScript.
I like how the map functions - the pointers are all responsive, zooming and changing map layers is easy. I do not the pointers. I would have prefered to keep something more arrow-shaped, but this was the only way I could change their appearance without having to find and download a picture.
If I had more time, I would figure out how to make better pointers. I would also add more points, such as the local points of interest such as Harper's Ferry and Maryland Heights.
The most frustrating part of making this map was getting the right code in place to make the map load. It took me three times, including one attempt at a completely blank page to try and verify if my template was the problem or not. Template was not the problem, and I still dont know what was. I must have been missing something in the code.
The most exciting part of this map was getting the map to load, after spending over 2 hours trying to get it to work.
