STAT 410 96-2 Assignment 3 Solutions
This was an assignment where everyone might use a different sample. As
such these solutions indicate only which formulas in the text are
appropriate for the estimates and standard errors.
- Total Government Transfer Payments to households in this population.
This is an estimate of a population total for which Yhat = N ybar is given
on page 21 and the estimated SE comes from 2.21.
- Average Employment Income of Employed persons in these households.
A ratio estimate: total employment income in the sample over total number
of employed persons in the sample. See formulas 2.46 and 2.47 for
estimated standard errors.
- Percentage of dwellings which are owner-occupied. Estimation of a
population proportion. This is a special kind of average. See my example
on the referendum in class or 3.3, 3.5 and 3.8 of chapter 3.
- Difference between mean household income of owner occupied houses and
mean household income of other houses. This is a problem on the difference
between two subpopulation means. See section 2.14 and formula 2.67. The
populations there must be replaced by two sample variances; these should
NOT be pooled as in the formula below 2.67.
