Thousands of years ago, Greece had already gained stature as a democracy nation. Hellas is also the birthplace of the Philosophy, Tragedy, Mathematics, Physics and Biology as well as the Olympic Games. A nation with more than three thousand years history! The Classic Years, the Alexandrine and the Roman Period are in perfect harmony with the Greek Orthodox Spirit of the Byzantine Times as well as with the neo-hellenic (i.e.new-Greek) culture. Greece is the birthplace of Pythagoras, Archimedes, Socrates, Plato, Pericles, Sofocles, Democritos, Aristotle and Alexander the Great. On the other hand, the Byzantine Empire which was a Greek Orthodox Empire it was that rescued, developed and spread the ancient Hellenic Civilisation to the other European and Asian Nations. It is known that this was the basis for our modern civilisation. Capital of Hellas, Athens, as well as its main Port, Piraeus is truly museums of this unique and unprecedented history. PIRAEUS Known as one of the more important ports in the Mediterranean Sea, Piraeus is a city that has a history of three millennia. Reduced over the centuries to a small village, it grew again as the main port of modern Greece since the early part of 19th century when the nation was freed from the Ottoman occupation. In the 20th century, Piraeus witnessed rapid expansion and today it has become a large metropolis with seashore natural beauty. The Pericleous Walls, the Municipal Theatre, the Church of the Holy Trinity, the Stadium of Peace and Friendship, the building of P.Vassanis (Hellenic Naval Academy main building) are the most important local attractions in the town which combines the local Mediterranean colour, the natural beauty and mild climate with the intense modern life. Piraeus offers a wide variety of dining and entertainment bargains. From picturesque little tavernas serving sea delicacies and Greek wine ("retsina"), to elegant restaurants specialising in international cuisine, one can choose a sumptuous meal that matches his or her taste for truly bargain prices. Besides, one can enjoy all the life of Athens, the capital of Greece, which is not far from Piraeus. The Acropolis, the Old Palace (today the Parliament building), the Panathinaiko Stadium, the Panepistimio (the National University), the Polytechneio (National Technical University of Athens), the Academy, the National Archeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, the War Museum are some of the major sights of Athens. A trip to Cape Sounion or to nearby islands of Salamina, Aigina, Hydra, Spetses and Poros can give to the visitor a taste of the environment of the Greek Archipelagos i.e. Aegean Sea as well as unprecedented memories and images. HELLENIC NAVAL ACADEMY Hellenic Naval Academy is a four-year Military Institution of University Education as well as a center of pure and applied (military) research. Founded in 1845, the Hellenic Naval Academy has produced the officers leaded the Hellenic Navy and Hellenic Armed Forces in general, in the war exploits of modern years. HNA is charged with preparing midshipmen for service as commisioned officers in the Hellenic Navy. Considered, under Hellenic law, equivalent to the other hellenic Institutions of Higher Learning, the HNA offers high-level studies in science and engineering. HNA is always characterized by the top social prestige and the top social achievement. Admission to the HNA is gained after succeful State Panhellenic Examinations. HNA ranks among the best institutions of Higher Education according to the degree of admissions competition.
