BACKGROUND

The 5th IEEE International Workshop on Cellular Neural Networks, CNNA-98,
will be held in London at South Bank University from 14th April to 18th
April 1998.  The biennial series of the CNNA conferences began in Budapest
(1990) and continued to be hosted in Munich(1992), Rome( 1994) and
Seville(1996). The seminal paper by Chua and Yang initiating this field was
published in 1988. Therefore, CNNA'98 will be marking the 10th anniversary
of the foundation of the subject and will serve to facilitate the
opportunity to celebrate its 10th birthday.


GENERAL  SCOPE

CNNA-98 will provide a forum for the presentation of the latest results and
the exploration of future directions in Cellular Neural Networks (CNN) and
their Applications. Indeed, "CNN Technology" is now becoming a generic name
for the concept of locally connected dynamic nonlinear processor arrays and
is covering broader and broader areas.

Topics of interest include, but not restricted to:


Basic theory, cellular nonlinear spatiotemporal phenomena;

Applications  including computing, communications and multimedia;

Learning;

Physical implementations (VLSI, optical, nanotechnology);

CNN development systems, software implementations and simulators;

CNN chip sets and CNN computers;

Cellular and sparsely connected dynamic processor systems;

Biologically relevant models and neuromorphic implementations.



Paper submissions on all aspects of Cellular Neural Networks are welcome.
However, in order to meet new challanges, CNNA'98 particularly welcomes
papers exploring the areas of significant interest, especially providing
innovative directions for the development of next generation CNN
applications including petaops speed and tens of thousands or million
processor systems.



HIGHLIGHTS  OF THE CONFERENCE


Some highlights of the Conference will be:


CNN universal chips embedded in chipsets and analogic CNN engine boards.

Biologically faithful neuromorphic CNN models for
predicting/explaining/using new discoveries in neuroscience.

Analogic CNN algorithms for dynamic spatiotemporal phenomena and innovative
real-life, mission critical applications.

Cellular distributed software agents in a dynamic large scale processor system.



REVIEW AND KEYNOTE LECTURES


Review  lectures will be on:

(i) the theoretical perspectives  by Leon O Chua;

(ii) the future of CNN computers by Tamas Roska; and

(iii) the physiologically faithful CNN models of the visual pathway by
Frank Werblin .

Keynote lectures by S.Y. Kung, Princeton University, a pioneer in Systolic
Arrays,  M. Kunt, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, a pioneer in
video coding, and B. Sheu, Univ. of Southern California, a pioneer in VLSI and
Multimedia Circuits & Systems will explore new directions and new application
areas of CNN Technology.


CALL FOR PAPERS


Prospective authors are invited to submit three copies of their papers to
the Conference Secreteriat.  Submissions should include a cover page with
contact author's name. Number of pages for each paper must not exceed 6 (A4
size).

Submission of full

January 1998
Reception of camera-ready papers:.......................15th February 1998

Although not required, athors are encouraged to submit their papers in the
final format.

The final paper format will be identical to that used at CNNA'96 and is
also placed on the
web site of CNNA'98.
