Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)
ATM is a network technology designed to meet the needs of the future broadband networks.
Developed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) as the set of standards for the Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (B-ISDN).
ATM networks employ cell switching:
- ATM cells are fixed-size packets of 53 bytes with 5 bytes of header and 48 bytes of payload.
- Routing information is stored in Virtual Circuit Identifier (VCI) part of the ATM cell header.
ATM is a connection-oriented protocol that requires connection setup before transmitting data.
