(also referred to as contour, direction,
profile) the
sign of a sound refers to the shape of the components of a morphology
(ordered set).
In spectral mutation, a sign refers to the contour from the intervallic
direction of frequency bands in an FFT. |
Sign, in all of Polansky's work with metrics and mutations
is defined as the
"direction" of change. Here, it means whether the
amplitude/phase values are less than, equal to or greater than the corresponding
values in either the previous spectral frame (relative mutation) or some
fixed amplitude (absolute mutation). In other words, the mutations extract
sign and magnitude of change for successive spectral frames (of both source
and target) and allow you to use various combinations and interpolations
of those values to create the mutant. |
