I was part of a team that created an android game using Unity heavily inspired from the main character's quirk of stacking on top of each other as they travelled.
In this project I was the core programmer: dealing with avatar control, game flow, and overall behaviour such as hit-boxing. On the design aspect of this game, I was part researcher for personas, prototyper, and user tester.
Initial Considerations
The type of people that would be our core users.
A storyboard of the game's flow
While I had inspiration I needed to research on what type of game would levy to the quirk of the characters. Through the course of three weeks, I suggested a mobile platform to the group due to the game’s nature of simple yet fun style. The core users would be tailored to a persona that included casual players of all ages who only need to play the game from time to time.
Prototyping and Development
Low Fidelity Paper prototypes of the game
I used it to confirm game flow without needing to program
Multiple designs for the maps and stages were made.
The final map redrawn in higher fidelity.
Using paper protoypes and multiple drawings, I had a clear picture of how the game would work programming wise as well as able to let users test even without a fully functional digital model.
Using the research, the game itself was built in unity.
After knowing what to build from the user research and lower fidelity prototypes, I built the game using Unity and C# and created a playable game that was exported out for the android platform.
Final Iteration
The final product was made and presented as a showcase to the general public. Users from the gaming industry were invited to test as well as the public audience. The general feedback was that ti was a fun game that adhered to the core user that would play it. I’m happy that it was able to give people a fun pastime.
If you would like to play the game yoruself you will need an android phone. It is an .apk file which needs permission to install onto the phone:
UnBEARableHunger APK
Have fun!
