Assignment Description

This project is created for IAT481, a special topic design course that focuses on the healthcare field. As a team of 4, we have to find and solve a design problem within 6 weeks, and during the process, we have to present our milestone to the class for critique and feedback.

Problem

The Electronic Health Record (EHR) is a common application used by doctors and nurses to organize patient information inside a clinic. After plenty of research, our team identified that the complex and outdated UI design in the old EHR is frustrating for health providers to use.

Old Marketing materials.

Information overflow and complex interactions are some major UX/UI issues that we recognized. We also noticed that this EHR application should be moved to tablets to improve the convenience for the clinic staff and improve face-to-face interaction between staff and patients.

Solution

The complex EHR interface was broke down into several pages in order to simplify the layout and reduce the amount of information on a single page. A refreshing colour palette of blue, green and light grey was chosen to reveal a clean and professional look.

Event booklet.

Interactions are made explicit with very clear prompts to guide users on where to tap or type. The overall font hierarchy, buttons designs and icon placements have made the new design more approachable and easy to learn.

We also implemented feedback and suggestions from doctors and other clinic staff throughout the design process, and carefully restructured the information architecture and redesigned the interfaces using the online tool Figma.

Outcome

Our redesigned EHR interface received an A grade from our professor and some highly rated comments from our guest critic from the healthcare field. The design of the final deliverables is greatly appreciated, including a Figma working prototype, report booklet and presentation slides.
