The BC Lung Trek
My dad always loved exercising on a bike. He couldn't go on a bike ride
for leisure, it always had to be as fast as possible. In the 1980s,
while I was
away at school, but dad took my 1973 Monshee "Tour de Canada" ten speed
and refurbished it. He found a strech of quiet road and laid out
a
circut for himself. I don't know how many times he went around
that path, but I know he went through a few tires in the process.
After my dad passed away I wanted to do something to honor him. A
friend dropped by on her bike one time and told me about the BC Lung
Bike
Trek. It was a 200KM trek from south Surrey to Cultus Lake and back
again. I hadn't been on my bike for years, but decided to give it a
try.
I dug my old bike out (my dad had bought a new one about 10 years
earlier) and spent a couple hundred dollars getting it "ready". In the
end, I spent more than that, but it was the principle of the thing (I
was the only one on the Trek on a 10 speed).
Here's a picture of me and my wife's friend Barb at the finish line:
I'm sweating a lot harder than she is ... but then I had a 30 year old
10 speed. If there's one thing I learned on this trip, it is to get a
new bike
for next year. Sentimentality only goes so far!
