Anita Kaur Atwal is joining SFU as Principal Consultant, Human Rights Office.

Anita Kaur Atwal is an experienced labour, employment and human rights lawyer who will be joining SFU as Principal Consultant, Human Rights Office. Anita will ensure the office continues to administer the Human Rights Policy (GP 18) and Procedures while the search for a permanent Director, Human Rights Office is underway.

Anita started her legal career in 2006 at a large regional firm in Vancouver, where she had a broad civil litigation practice servicing clients in local government, labour and employment, insurance, and commercial litigation. In 2017, she joined a boutique labour, employment, and human rights firm where she focused exclusively on workplace law. In 2022, Anita followed her heart and opened Anita Atwal Law, a boutique labour and employment firm focused on providing practical solutions to workplace issues. Anita is active in the legal community and is a firm believer in access to justice. She takes a trauma informed and culturally competent approach to her practice and is a strong believer in empowering individuals and organizations with the tools to make decisions aligned with their values and objectives.

Anita has represented a broad spectrum of clients at various tribunals and all levels of court in British Columbia. She is also a skilled mediator, having received her training at the Harvard Negotiation Institute. She is on Mediate B.C.’s Associate Civil Roster. She is frequently invited to present on a variety of topics related to human rights, workplace law, mediations and equity and diversity.

The Human Rights Office is a critical part of our university, providing safe, timely, confidential and impartial advice, support, referrals and information to members of the SFU community on issues related to human rights.
