September 19 to be treated as a statutory holiday
Earlier today, the Canadian Government formally recognized Monday, September 19, 2022 as a federal holiday for federal government employees in recognition of the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. The Government of British Columbia has advised all provincial public-sector employers to honour this day, including K-12 public schools and public post-secondary institutions.
As part of this directive, SFU will cancel all classes and suspend non-essential campus services on Monday, September 19, 2022.
- Campus buildings remain open on all SFU campuses, but the libraries and Lorne Davies Sports Complex will be closed.
- All classes, exams, university services and campus activities are cancelled for the entire day.
- SFU Burnaby Residence and Housing dining hall and front desk will remain open.
- All events and activities taking place on campus will be postponed.
In alignment with collective agreements and University Policies AD 9 and AD 10, university employees normally entitled to federal and provincial holidays will receive September 19, 2022 as a paid day off, or another scheduled day off in lieu. If you require further direction about how this applies to you, please speak to your supervisor.
We recognize that this news may be difficult or traumatizing for members of the community. Resources and supports for students, faculty and staff are available via the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion website: https://www.sfu.ca/edi/support/students.html.
Thank you in advance for your flexibility to allow for this provincially declared holiday.
Sincerely,
