Heart of The City Festival at SFU

November 09, 2015

SFU’s Vancity Office of Community Engagement was pleased to welcome back Heart of the City Festival to our space for four exciting events.

On Friday, October 30, the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre host their annual celebratory Beauty Within Fashion Show, in which women and elders from the DTES Women’s Centre model clothing from the Centre’s clothing room and donated by My Sister’s Closet. The crowd-pleasing runway show was held in the World Art Centre.

Back to back film screenings were held on Saturday, October 31, featuring “Raising Sh*t,” a series of shorts on Bud Osborne, social activist and poet laureate of the DTES, and Estate, a Reverie, a documentary on the Haggerston Estate that reveals and celebrates the resilience of people who are profoundly overlooked by media representations and wider social responses.

The World Art Centre was once again brought to life by a Work-in-Progress performance by the Carnegie Dance Troupe and Karen Jamieson Dance on Sunday, November 1. The group brings together people of all ages, cultures and abilities to create a work of art. Although the weather was less than pleasant, they was able to draw and engage a keen audience with a showcase of the beginning stages of a new dance piece slated for premiere in 2016.
