Secondary Mathematics Education Minor

This minor will interest pre-service teachers who are considering a career in teaching secondary mathematics.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have sufficient course work to teach secondary mathematics (usually the equivalent of a minor in mathematics).

Upper Division Requirements

Students complete a minimum total of 15 units, including both of

EDUC 411 - Investigations in Mathematics for Secondary Teachers (3)
EDUC 415 - Designs for Learning: Secondary Mathematics (4)

and one of

EDUC 412W - Designs for Learning: Secondary Language Arts (4)
EDUC 414 - Designs for Learning: Secondary Social Studies (4)
EDUC 416 - Designs for Learning: Secondary Science (4)
EDUC 428W - Nature and Nurture of Gifted Students (4)
EDUC 452 - Environmental Education (8)
EDUC 467 - Curriculum and Instruction in Teaching English as an Additional Language (4)
EDUC 469 - Music Education as Thinking in Sound (4)
EDUC 477 - Designs for Learning: Art (4)
EDUC 478 - Designs for Learning: Music (4)
EDUC 480 - Designs for Learning: French as a Second Language (4)
EDUC 481 - Designs for Learning: French Immersion Programs and Francophone Schools (4)
EDUC 482 - Designs for Learning: Information Technology (4)

and additional 300 or 400 division course(s) in education to complete the total of at least 15 units (excluding EDUC 475).

Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements

Students admitted to Simon Fraser University beginning in the fall 2006 term must meet writing, quantitative and breadth requirements as part of any degree program they may undertake. See Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements for university-wide information.

A grade of C- or better is required to earn W, Q or B credit

Additional Breadth

Two courses (total six units or more) outside the student's major subject (may or may not be B-designated courses, and will likely help fulfil individual degree program requirements).

Students choosing to complete a joint major, joint honours, double major, two extended minors, an extended minor and a minor, or two minors may satisfy the breadth requirements (designated or not designated) with courses completed in either one or both program areas.
