Master of Arts for Teachers of English

This master of arts (MA) cohort program, for English teachers in the secondary and elementary school and collegiate system, offers an accessible two year advanced degree in English studies which recognizes the particular needs of teachers for a review of new critical approaches in the field, and for scheduling adapted to the demands of employment.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the university admission requirements as stated in Graduate General Regulations 1.3 in the SFU Calendar.

Program Requirements

This cohort program consists of course work and a project for a minimum of 38 units.

Students must complete all of

ENGL 831 - Studies in Early Modern Literature (4)
ENGL 834 - Studies in Twentieth-Century Literature (4)
ENGL 880 - Pro-seminar I (4)
ENGL 881 - Pro-seminar II (4)

and 16 elective graduate units

and a paper or project

ENGL 891 - MA Paper/Project (6)

Program Length

Students are expected to complete the program requirements in six terms.

Other Information

Unsatisfactory Progress

The department regards grades below B to be unsatisfactory and expects students to achieve above the minimum. If progress is unsatisfactory, withdrawal as per GGR 1.8.2 Review of Unsatisfactory Progress may be required.

Project

The paper or project is completed and submitted for evaluation no later than the end of the term following course work completion. A student who fails may be permitted a second and final attempt. The paper or project is examined by two readers. It is not required to be submitted to the library.
