School of Engineering Science | Faculty of Applied Sciences Simon Fraser University Calendar | Spring 2025

Engineering Science

Master of Engineering

The school offers a course-intensive master of engineering (MEng) program. Students in the MEng program are ineligible for university financial support except for a teaching assistantship (TA). MEng students have lower TA priority than PhD and MASc students from the School of Engineering Science.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the University admission requirements as stated in Graduate General Regulation 1.3 in the SFU Calendar and have a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, biomedical engineering, engineering science, or a related area, with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (B average) from a recognized university, or equivalent. International applicants must also meet the university's requirement on English proficiency.

Program Requirements

This program consists of required courses and elective courses for a minimum of 30 units.

Students complete the following

ENSC 820 - Engineering Management for Development Projects (3)

This course focuses on the management and reporting activities of typical engineering development projects. Through seminars and workshops it builds the student's skills at estimating project cost and schedule, keeping a project on track, and handing over the completed project to a customer or another team. A writing workshop emphasizes techniques for writing proposals, and writing and controlling documentation. Note that ENSC 820 will not count towards the course work requirement of students enrolled in the MASc program.

and 12 units of ENSC graduate courses (excluding ENSC 704, ENSC 803, ENSC 820, ENSC 891, ENSC 892, ENSC 896, ENSC 897, ENSC 898, ENSC 899)

and 15 units of additional graduate courses (any graduate courses from ENSC or up to 9 units from other departments in the Faculty of Applied Sciences or the Faculty of Science; ENSC 704 can be taken twice and counted towards this requirement).

The following courses can be used towards the 15 units of graduate courses:

ENSC 704 - Industrial Internship (3)

The first term of an internship in industry or a research environment for MASc, PhD and MEng students. A final report will be submitted and graded by the student's supervisor. Graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis. Prerequisite: 12 units of ENSC course work at the 800-level or higher with an SFU CGPA of at least 3.0. Approval of supervisor and a GPC representative is required prior to applying for, and accepting an internship.

*Project

ENSC 897 is an elective course. Students interested in doing a project should approach ENSC faculty members with matching interests. Availability of projects may depend on faculty member's interests and schedule, as well as student's prior academic performance. Students who find a faculty member willing to be their MEng project supervisor should register for the course ENSC 897-6 MEng Project. At the completion of the course, the student should submit a MEng project report and give an oral presentation to the supervisory committee that includes at least two faculty members. Students who do not complete ENSC 897-6 in one term must enroll in ENSC 896-6 (MEng Project Completion) in all subsequent terms until the project is complete, but only need to pay 50% of the tuition for the ENSC 896 credits.

Program Length

Students are expected to complete the program requirements in six terms.

Other Information

International Students

International MEng students with a study permit should register in at least two courses each term with a total of six or more units to maintain full-time status.

Industrial Internship

The industrial internship is considered a course and will be charged at the per unit rate for the program. Approval of supervisor and a GPC representative is required prior to applying for, and accepting an internship.

Supervisory Committee

The Chair of the Graduate Program Committee is the default supervisor of all MEng students. When a faculty member agrees to supervise a MEng student for the student's ENSC 897-6 MEng Project course, the faculty member becomes the supervisor of the MEng student.

Transfer from MEng to MASc Program

A transfer from the MEng to the master of applied science (MASc) program will be considered if the student meets all the admission requirements of the MASc program, and if the proposed supervisor can provide financial support that meets the school's minimum requirement for MASc students.

Academic Requirements within the Graduate General Regulations

All graduate students must satisfy the academic requirements that are specified in the Graduate General Regulations, as well as the specific requirements for the program in which they are enrolled.
